The boat wasn’t supposed to be there.
At least, that’s what Ryan kept telling himself.
He and his childhood friend, Mason, had rented a small fishing boat for the weekend. They weren’t professional sailors. They weren’t explorers. They were simply two friends who wanted to spend a quiet Saturday away from the city.
But around 4:30 that afternoon, Mason spotted something in the distance.
“Is that a ship?”
Ryan looked up.
Several hundred meters away sat an enormous cargo vessel.
It looked ancient.
Rust covered its sides. Several windows were shattered. One of its cranes hung at an unnatural angle.
And strangely, there was no flag.
No crew.
No movement.
Mason grinned.
“We have to see this.”
Ryan immediately shook his head.
“No, we absolutely don’t.”
Twenty minutes later, they were pulling their tiny boat alongside it.

The Ladder Was Already Down
That was the first strange thing.
A rope ladder hung over the ship’s side, almost as though somebody had lowered it recently.
Mason grabbed it.
“Five minutes.”
Those five minutes would turn into the biggest mistake of their lives.
They climbed onto the deck.
Everything was silent.
Empty containers stood scattered around them. Broken glass crunched beneath their shoes.
“Hello?” Mason shouted.
Nothing.
They entered through an open doorway.
Inside, the smell of rust and seawater was overwhelming.
They found sleeping quarters first.
Mattresses.
Clothes.
An old pair of boots.
A toothbrush beside a sink.
It didn’t look like a ship that had been carefully decommissioned.
It looked like everyone had simply walked away.
Then Ryan noticed a clock hanging on the wall.
It had stopped at 2:17.
They continued toward the bridge.
That’s when they heard it.
Clang.
Both men stopped.
“What was that?”
Mason smiled nervously.
“Metal moving.”
Then it happened again.
Clang.
Except this time, it came from the floor beneath them.
Someone Had Written on the Wall
They descended one level.
The corridor was darker here.
Ryan used his phone flashlight while Mason recorded everything.
Then Mason suddenly stopped.
“Dude.”
Someone had scratched words into the wall.
DON’T ANSWER THE RADIO.
Ryan stared at it.
“What radio?”
Almost immediately—
Static exploded from somewhere nearby.
Both men jumped.
A room farther down the corridor contained an old communications console.
And somehow, one radio was operating.
Static crackled through the speaker.
Then a voice emerged.
“Hello?”
Ryan’s face went pale.
Mason stepped toward it.
“Don’t.”
But Mason picked up the microphone.
“Hello? Who is this?”
Silence.
Then:
“Where are you?”
Mason laughed nervously.
“We’re aboard this abandoned cargo ship.”
The radio went silent again.
Then the voice returned.
“I know.”
Ryan grabbed Mason.
“We’re leaving.”

Then They Heard Footsteps
They hurried toward the stairs.
Halfway there, something moved above them.
One step.
Then another.
Then another.
Someone was walking across the deck.
Mason whispered, “Maybe someone else boarded.”
Ryan didn’t answer.
They reached the stairs.
Then Mason looked through a small window toward their fishing boat.
His expression changed instantly.
“Ryan…”
Their boat wasn’t beside the ship anymore.
The rope had been cut.
Their boat was drifting dozens of meters away.
Neither man spoke.
Someone had untied them.
Or cut them loose.
And whoever had done it was still aboard.
They Started Running
The footsteps returned.
Faster now.
Ryan and Mason moved through another corridor, desperately searching for somewhere to hide.
They found a storage room and locked themselves inside.
For almost a minute, there was silence.
Then footsteps stopped outside.
Ryan covered his mouth.
Mason held his phone toward the door.
The handle moved.
Slowly.
Once.
Twice.
Then stopped.
A shadow passed underneath.
Several minutes later, everything went quiet.
The two men waited before opening the door.
Nobody was there.
But something had been placed on the floor.
A fresh plastic water bottle.
Not dusty.
Not old.
Fresh.
Someone was living on the ship.
The Truth Wasn’t Supernatural
Eventually, Ryan found an emergency ladder on the opposite side of the vessel.
They climbed down and entered the water.
Their fishing boat had drifted far enough that swimming to it was impossible.
Fortunately, another recreational vessel spotted them roughly twenty minutes later.
They immediately contacted authorities.
When officials searched the abandoned vessel, they discovered evidence that several people had been secretly using it as temporary shelter.
Food.
Water.
Batteries.
Sleeping bags.
That explained the footsteps.
It explained the radio.
It probably explained their cut rope.
But there was one thing Ryan could never explain.
When authorities boarded the ship…
Nobody was there.
